Clinical Study Shows Matrix RF Safe For Darker Skin Types
Posted April 10th, 2009Practitioners are now able to provide safe and effective fractional skin resurfacing treatments to darker skinned patients with the Matrix RF, according to clinical studies performed by Tess Mauricio, M.D., and John Shieh, M.D.
Dr. Tess Mauricio, M.D. (left), Founder of Scripps Ranch Dermatology and Cosmetic Center in San Diego, CA, reports that Matrix RF is both safe and effective for patients with darker skin types such as Asian, Hispanic, East Indian and African-Americans. Her patients are both female and male, and range in age from late twenties to late fifties. They're being treated for wrinkles, pore size and pigmentation.
Dr. Mauricio says that patients are very excited with results after only two treatment sessions--and patients' co-workers and family members also mention how much better they look. Her study reports an increase in new collagen formation, skin tightening and overall rejuvenation.
John Shieh, M.D. (right), Family Practitioner, RejuvaMed/RejuvaYou Medical Group in Los Angeles, CA, says "patients with darker skin types would traditionally be turned away because of the risks associated with lasers." But with Matrix RF's tunable and controllable settings, Dr. Shieh has treated textural conditions, fine lines, wrinkles, and even acne scarring.
Dr. Mauricio confirmed that the Matrix RF is different. She said, "The Matrix RF is a non-laser, non-light based fractional device. Its energy source is radiofrequency, which effectively delivers a safe amount of heat energy directly to the treatment site."
In addition, Dr. Mauricio found that, while other fractional devices require multiple passes over the skin, "the Matrix RF is a single pass technique--a full face scan can be completed in approximately 15 - 20 minutes."

Clinical Study: Matrix RF is Safe and Effective for Skin Rejuvenation and Wrinkle Reduction
Posted April 2nd, 2009
A clinical study performed by George J. Hruza, M.D., Amy Forman Taub, M.D., and Stephen Mulholland, M.D., concluded that the Matrix RF technique achieves much better results compared to non-ablative resurfacing--and has a much faster recovery compared to fully ablative resurfacing (including CO2).
Skin resurfacing has evolved rapidly over the past 15 years from ablative to non-ablative, and most recently fractional ablative resurfacing. Matrix RF fractional skin resurfacing differs from the others in that it's customizable for skin types, it can be targeted for specific areas and intensities, and it treats tiny dots of skin--leaving the untreated skin surrounding the dots free to help heal the treated skin faster.
The study found that patients undergoing facial treatment had minimal discomfort, no permanent side effects and minimal downtime. One month following the treatments, physicians found improvement in these areas:
83% of the patients showed improvement in skin brightness
87% of the patients showed improvement in skin tightness
90% of the patients showed improvement in wrinkles
The doctors concluded that, based on their clinical experience, fractional RF delivery via Matrix RF can be used safely in most if not all skin types, giving a significant visible improvement in skin smoothness, tightness, brightness and wrinkles.
